Creatinine 0.4 mg/dl in your blood test results

You received your blood test result with a Creatinine value of 0.4 mg/dl. This analysis helps you to check if your Creatinine value is within normal range.

Your Creatinine value of 0.4 mg/dl is way too low. A good Creatinine is usually between 0.6 and 1.3 mg/dl.

Increase your Creatinine by 0.2 mg/dl to be within normal range.

Please note: gender influences the normal range of the creatinine level. For men, 0.6 - 1.2 mg/dl are considered normal, while for woman values between 0.5 - 1.1 mg/dl are within normal range.

Causes

Very old people and babies tend to have low creatinine levels as do people who are malnourished, have lost a great deal of weight or who have been sick for a long time. People with liver disease are also at risk, for the liver produces creatine. Most of these people do not have much muscle mass. Diseases that cause wasting of the muscles, such as muscular dystrophy, put a person at risk for a low creatinine level.

Treatment & Medication

Treatment depends on what is causing the low creatinine level. Corticosteroids are sometimes given to support muscle strength. Strength training exercises also help.

Useful Information

Creatinine is a substance that is a by-product of the breakdown of an amino acid called creatine. This breakdown is a result of the normal stresses on the muscles, so everybody has some level of creatinine in their blood. The bloodstream carries creatinine to the kidneys, and the kidneys help to excrete it via the urine. The normal levels of creatinine are not universal but depend on the person’s age, gender, race and size. Normal blood levels are 0.6 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter in men and and 0.5 to 1.1 dL in women. However, the levels in a person who has only one kidney may be as high as 1.8 or 1.9. A baby who has a level of 2.0 or higher mostly likely has a serious kidney disease. The same is true if the levels go to 5.0 or higher in an adult.
