Causes

Low lymphocyte levels are called lymphocytopenia. Lymphocyte levels can become too low because something is destroying them, the body isn’t producing as many as it should or they are caught in parts of the lymphatic system such as the spleen. People’s lymphocyte levels can fall when they have a minor disease such as the common cold, but lymphocytopenia is also seen in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, the flu and cancers such as Hodgkin’s disease. People who are malnourished, are undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy or are on steroids are also at risk for low lymphocyte levels.

Treatment & Medication

Treatment for a low lymphocyte level depends on what is causing it. Some people with mild cases do not need treatment, and the condition resolves by itself. If the condition is caused by a bacteria, the doctor may prescribe immune globulin to support the person’s immune system.

Useful Information

Lymphocytes are types of white blood cells. These cells make up part of the immune system, which protects the body from attack from pathogens and toxins. They also destroy diseased cells, including cancer cells and prevent the body from attacking itself.

There are two types of lymphocytes: B and T cells. They are named because B cells stay in a person’s bone marrow and T cells go to the thymus, which is an organ found just behind the breastbone. There are different types of B and T cells.
