Causes
A high MCV can be caused by several factors:
- Macrocytosis
- Macrocytic anemia
- Aplastic anemia
- Pernicious anemia
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
- Liver disease
- Hypothyroidism
- Splenectomy
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Folate deficiency
- High alcoholic intake
- A normal reaction to certain medications
People who are at high risk of developing a high MCV include those affected by any of the factors listed above, as well as those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet.
Treatment & Medication
Depending on how high the MCV level is, treatment may include medication, dietary supplements, and dietary changes to include foods fortified in vitamin B12 and folate. If certain medications are found to be responsible for a high MCV level they may be eliminated from the patient's regimen. Lowering the overall consumption of alcohol is also recommended.
Useful Information
The Mean Corpuscular Volume is one of the components of a Complete Blood Count blood test. The MCV is used to measure the volume of red blood cells and help identify certain blood disorders.
